The Saklıkent Gorge, located just on the edge of the Muğla province, is so much more than just a gorge. It will give you the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. Saklıkent means “hidden city” in Turkish and is the second largest gorge in the European area. While it may take a little bit of time to get there, it will be well worth the trip.

The gorge itself will astound you with its tall cliff sides of the rock formations and the swift, cool waters running through them. On a hot day, the gorge would serve as a lovely break from the hot summer sun. The shadows of the tall rocks and the cool water of the stream are sure to cool you off, even on the hottest of July days.

The gorge is not just a stunning adventure, but a remarkable natural site. As you walk through the immense gorge, you will hear the sound of the rushing waters while you gaze upwards to marvel at the astounding height of the surrounding rock faces.

If you plan to walk through the gorge, know that you need to have good mobility and water shoes. While you can rent them there, they do cost and have, of course, been worn by other travelers. So if you wish to wear your own shoes, bring along some water shoes as there are points of the trek where you wade through the powerful waters. The path can be slick at time sso be careful, but it is, otherwise, a very simple and easy walk.

Relaxing at the Gorge

Perhaps after trekking through the swift waters you wish to relax a bit before heading back. Pull up a chair at a cafe and enjoy a lovely cup of traditional Turkish tea while you listen to the running waters and look out over the breathtaking natural site of Saklikent Gorge.

If you take the jeep safari, the tour will take you to the gorge and you will have the opportunity to explore the gorge for a while during the scheduled stop. If you don’t take a private tour, you can always rent a car and drive there yourself. The drive takes roughly 47 minutes. However, if neither of these options speak to you, the dolmus of the area will take you there as well. Just find a map for the buses or ask at your hotel for more information.
